Remarks: 07/25: Miami-Dade County commissioners have approved a plan to build a new regional WtE plant. The decision follows prior rejection of potential sites in Doral and Medley. 02/25: The final vote on the WtE proposal will not take place in February 2025. Instead, the commissioners intend to discuss the decision on the WtE facility again in July 2025, with a final decision to be made when the administration presents all the information. 01/25: The plans to replace the destroyed WtE facility in Doral might be cancelled entirely. The mayor of Miami-Dade is now backing off from her administration’s recommendation to rebuild the plant. A new landfill would cost USD 556 million, versus USD 1.5 billion for a WtE plant. 12/24: The decision regarding the location of the WtE facility to replace the destroyed plant in Doral has been postponed until February 2025. 09/24: A new potential site is located on rock mining land close to the Milton E. Thompson County Park in Miami. 08/24: Capacity for WtE facility and RDF production facility together: 4,000 tpd. 05/24: The Miami-Dade Commission is currently reviewing three possible locations for the Doral WtE plant replacement, namely at sites at the Opa-locka West Airport, Doral, and Medley. The Doral location would be the fastest and least expensive option. The Medley site would be more complicated, especially in regards to obtaining air permits from the EPA. For the third location, the Opa-locka West Airport, the nearby city of Miramar has already stated to initiate a lawsuit if this location was chosen. 08/23: Miami Dade County Government now proposes to replace the facility. 02/23: The discussion on the location is ongoing. 07/22: Possible sites are the site of the existing plant, the town of Medley as well as two locations on Ingraham Highway. The County Mayor has the possibility to veto the recommendation. The plant is expected to be completed not until the early 2030s.
